    Cable modems are great…

When they work. I fried the power supply to mine last week, so I spent the weekend using dialup and borrowing from friends and neighbors.
I got a replacement modem from my father in law on Monday, and set it up – and have only had one 24 hour period with sustained uptime since then. It has gotten much better since my last reset of the modem, but…. if it keeps crapping out on me, I’m thinking a switch to DSL might be in my future. Anyone know of any good deals going on right now?

    Censorship on tv? Never….

So, I’m watching The Caroline Rhea Show on the ABCFamily channel. I don’t normally watch Caroline’s show, but Jamie Gertz was on, and it’s so late its not funny, so whatever.
Anyway, during the interview Caroline is talking about the show Jamie is in, which is on CBS, and there’s a dropout in the audio when she gets to the bit where she would say “such and such a show at such and such a time on whatever day, some giant network.” The dropout was specifically when she would have said CBS. I didn’t think anything of it, since my cable service died earlier for certain channels, so… it might be a part of the same problem.
Later, during a chat with Matthew Lawrence, who’s in “American Dreams” on NBC, the same thing happens – the audio drops out when she’d be saying NBC.
I think to myself “hmmm, that’s odd.” Then I think about the previous instance, and realize that ABC/ABC Family are so paranoid about people going to another channel that they’re obscuring the references to other channels.
    How sad is that?

I just got done writing a letter to ABC regarding the show Dragnet. I am tried of being forced to watch the previews to trash shows when I am trying to watch decent shows with my family. NOT EVERYONE IN THIS COUNTRY WANTS TO SEE NAKED WOMEN BEING DISRESPECTED ON TV 24/7! ABC IS NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY! SO BEWARE!

With regard to your comments about the previews for their new “are you hot” show – it’s been my experience that it’s usually shown after 9:30, and Dragnet is on at 10:00 – not the time that small children are usually up. If the adults in your house don’t like it (I could care less either way about the ads) then just don’t watch them.
Let’s face it, no broadcast network is really family friendly – they’re in business to make money, and if it means showing some skin or using sex to sell ads, then they’ll do it.
      Such is life.

naked women being disrespected? are these women being forced to do such commercials? no.. they are there willingly.. so they arent being disrespected… i dont care to see it either, but they arent being disrespected… at any rate, my favorite show.. only one i watch really on ABC family is whose line is it anyway… which i think would be 10x funnier and fun to watch if it was on another channel that let the people on the show say more.. u cant even say masturbate on that show… its rediculous… if those actors were allowed to say more of what they wanted to say, the show would be alot better and more fun to watch.. whenever somethin gets censored, all i can do is shake my head cause thier talents as well as the potential of the show are limited and it pisses me off… put the show on FX or some station that isnt afraid to let them say what they want aside from “fuck” … but even that is coming… “whose line is it anyway?” is more of an adult show anyways and should be aired and aimed to an adult audience… its potential is severely limited and held back due to this censorship..

    STOP WHINING!

The state of Connecticut is in the midst of a budget fiasco – we’re in a deficit that’s growing daily, so Governor Rowland wants to lay off state employees.
Guess what? They don’t want to lose their jobs – not that I blame them. I lost my job 5 months ago, and it’s pretty crappy. But at least they know it’s coming – not that it’s much help, but at least it won’t be a total surprise.

    How crazy is this?

    eBay item 1979941808 (Ends Dec-15-02 13:29:00 PST ) – FRIENDS,walk-on appearance,tickets for 2
That’s right, you could win a walk-on part for the hit series “Friends“. But not just a walk-on role, you’d also get flown out there and a photo signed by the whole cast. Good thing it’s for charity….

    Screen saver fun

So, let’s say you’ve just downloaded a really cool screensaver – like this one:
    snowsaver.jpg.
Let’s say you have a pretty “jiggy” computer – i.e. fast processor, tons of RAM, and a really sweet display – so the screensaver looks really cool.
    But what if…..
What if you could have the screensaver running as your desktop pattern? That would be pretty cool, huh?
Type this in your terminal window:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/
    ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background &

(it has to be all on one line)
Next thing you know, your active screensaver will be running as your desktop pattern!

Max is back – and he's better (paid) than ever!

CNN.com – Gibson to appear in new ‘Mad Max’ film – Dec. 10, 2002
Gibson to appear in new ‘Mad Max’ film
This should be pretty interesting – Mel Gibson is getting $25 million to star, and it’s supposed to cost $104 million to make. I just hope it does well in the theatres…. But I know that I’ll be there to watch it.

    Software update

Did you know that you can use the Software Update software via the command line? Try it at the command line:
    softwareupdate
It should return a list of updates that are available for your computer. Type it again with the number of the update you want to apply and you’ll be installing just like that – it’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s fun (well, two out of three ain’t bad! :) )

    Wi-Fi? Uh-oh!

Wired News: Feds Label Wi-Fi a Terrorist Tool
“Homeland Security is putting people in place who will be in a position to say, ‘If you’re going to get broken into … we’re going to start regulating,’” said Cable and Wireless security architect Shannon Myers in a panel dubbed “Homeland Security vs. Wi-Fi.”
Well, I know that my wireless access point can be “seen” outside of my home, but I’ve taken measures to make sure no-one can use it without my authorizing them – unlike, say, one of my neighbors…. :)

You never know what you had 'till it's gone…

While moving my office equipment around last night, I managed to burn out the power adaptor for my cable modem. What does that mean? It means that I can’t access the internet except via dial-up. Which sucks. Totally sucks.
I’ve been trying to figure out a way to get onto my AOL account – I have free hours up the wazoo over there – but I can’t download the OS X client. Why? It would take like 3 hours via dial-up, and I can’t get online any other way – unless I go visit my folks and “borrow” my mothers cable modem…
On the plus side, my father in law used to have broadband via a cable modem supplied by @home. They’re no longer in business, as you probably know, but for some reason he still has the modem (and is, I think, still paying for it – but let’s not get into that just now). Anyway, it’s DOCSIS compliant (the cable modem standard, or something), so theoretically I can just swap it out for the old one and be back online in no time.
Or, I can go to Radio Shack (in the mall, on the weekend) and try to get a power adaptor. I checked all the millions of adaptors we have all over the house, and nothing even comes close to the right voltage for what I need – which means I’ll have to pay a pretty penny for what I need. Maybe.

Coming soon to a city near you: Big Brother

2600 NEWS: PHOTOGRAPHER ARRESTED FOR TAKING PICTURES OF VICE PRESIDENT’S HOTEL
I won’t even pretend to assume that the photographer was either being overtly “terrorist”-ic (aka acting funny) or displaying any other “funny” behavior, but this seems to be pushing the new police-state type powers a bit far.
Guess I should have been arrested when I went to D.C. during a spring break in high school and taking photos of the White House….

    Take that, you dirty spammer!

Slashdot: News for nerds, stuff that matters
Bob writes "I think everyone by now has heard of the millionaire spammer Alan Ralsky. Here’s a follow-up to the previous story. It seems that since the story was posted, people have signed him up for every advertising campaign and mailing list out there. And he doesn’t like it." They’re talking about this Slashdot story.
If he didn’t want to be the target of every anti-spammer (or victim’s of spam) on the planet, then it seems he had several options:
    a) not getting into the spam business in the first place
    b) quitting when Verizon sued and won
    c) not agreeing to the interview
    d) not revealing any info about where he lives
    e) not irritating the reporter into indicating, in the article, that he can be located by simply going down to town hall
Anyway, now he wants to sue the anti-spammers et al who have signed him up for just about every conceiveable mailing/marketing/whatever list on the planet. The suit is for harassment. I wonder if he sees the irony in all of this….
