Tempus Fugit

Ever notice how time flies by sometimes, but other times it’s not so quick?
This morning, I had to get up obscenely early to go to work. The alarm went off, and I was actually up before it went off. I proceeded to do my thing, getting dressed and packing up final bits that I needed to bring with me – usual stuff. I look at the clock, and it’s only been 9 minutes. That means it’s now only 5:09 am, and I’m all set to go – but it feels like I’ve been up for half an hour already.

Looks like Opteron isn't all that OR a bag of chips….

Power Macintosh Dual G5 versus Dual Opteron
Overall, the G5 faired better than an Opteron – with the odd exception of Adobe Photoshop. Read it for more info.

It was bound to happen…

Welcome to http://www.cube-a-door.com
What is a cube-a-door?
- The Cube-a-Door® is a free-standing cardboard partition designed to fit across the entrance of a cubicle or other work area.
- Ideal for meeting critical deadlines and working on important projects.
- Low cost solution to increase efficiency and productivity.
- Tells approaching co-workers “Work In Progress | Please Do Not Disturb”.
- The corrugated construction allows for self-adhesive notes and tacks to be easily used.

I personally like the psuedo-hairpiece that the guy on the homepage seems to be wearing…
I guess if you have a full-height – or even three-quarter-height – cube – then this would be pretty useful.

Number portability: the saga continues…

So, a couple of weeks ago I decided to make the change I’ve been threatening to make – I switched cell phone carriers.
I’m now a fairly happy Cingular customer, and the switch wasn’t too bad.
I went in during a lunch break and told them which phone I wanted and which plan, and they started the process. The biggest problem I encountered was the automated call center where you can check the transfer status – they kept claiming there was a problem. When I got a human on the phone, I was told it wasn’t in the system, even though several hours had elapsed.
Eventually, it turns out, it was partially due to a not filled request and just the amount of time that it takes to process the request. I went back to the store the next day and the phone worked fine, so I don’t know what I was worried about.
Now I’m all set with the service, but how is it? Well… it’s about the same as what I had with Sprint – meaning that in valleys and other places where tower placement is a problem, I can’t always get a signal, and in places where there are tons of towers, it works great.
The biggest plus so far is that the cell tower near our house seems to be a Cingular carrier – I get a great signal in the whole house, including the basement!
Their online account management site is nice, and even nicer once I figured out how to get my account number (i.e. by calling Cingular to get it). I can get almost up to the minute call details – including incoming and outgoing numbers – and apparently I can change my plan any time I feel like it – hopefully without having to pay any fees.
So far, I’m pretty happy with it. Jen has a Cingular phone too, so we’re going to look into the mobile-to-mobile minutes options, so we don’t have to pay for calls to each other. Other than that and the “7/7/7″ plan – seven days a week, the night/evening call time starts at 7:00 pm for $7 a month – I think I don’t need to worry about the plan at all.

Cam's back and other good stuff

Well, since I’m without my wonderful PowerBook, I thought I’d try using my cam and my PC to see if I can do it. It’s not pretty, but there it is – me in all my glory, or something.
My plans for this weekend, besides the whole Christmas thing, include doing some site changes once I figure out how to properly get my site onto the PC and not kill myself or anyone/anything in the process.
I might try to finish my collosal site redesign over the weekend, but I think it probably won’t happen – it’s still very much in flux in my head, and besides, I’m hoping to have some new toys to play with!

How cool is this?

http://acg.media.mit.edu/people/fry/zipdecode/
I knew that the ZIP code system was planned and all that, but this makes it just a bit easier to see what they were thinking.
It’s also interesting when you think about it – how much would the mail suck if we didn’t use them???

Server in a lunchbox

PSI-WEB is a webserver that someone built from scratch and then put into a lock box.
I’m sure it’s not the fastest thing on the block, but it’s still pretty cool.

Cube house

Cube Home for the holidays…
For under $50, he turned his cubicle into a house all decorated for the winter holidays. I wonder if the fire marshall was involved….

The dilemma

So, it looks like the insurance company is going to cover some or most of the cost of a new computer – or, at least, that’s what they’re saying right now. There’s paperwork on the way, and I need to get the old “dead” computer checked out somewhere….
But now I have to figure out what I want and how I want it setup. It’s not often you get to upgrade your computer and have someone else pay for it – considering they’re doing a “comparable” upgrade, computer wise, that means a pretty sweet little machine will be working it’s way to me at some point in the not so distant future…..

Oh crap

So, jen worked last night, and then stayed up until about noon so we could go to church and have breakfast and stuff.
I was doing some work in the basement and hanging out with the kids down there. Well, kids meaning :emma: and :noah: – :abby: was upstairs, cuddling with mom and hopefully taking a nap.
I heard noises from the kitchen, so I went upstairs to check it out – and found :abby: had just dumped over my glass of water. Onto the table. And my laptop.
I took it to the sink to see how much drained out when I tipped it over – and more than a little came out. I took it apart to dry it out – there didn’t seem to be a lot of water left over, but I have no idea where it went inside the computer, or what it affected.
I’m not looking forward to tomorrow, when I have to try the computer again, or when I have to call the insurance company…..

The Norm imitates life…

Now that I know what’s going on, I really don’t know what’s going on.
If things at my former employer had been a bit more like this, at least I might have enjoyed it more…..
