So, a couple of weeks ago I decided to make the change I’ve been threatening to make – I switched cell phone carriers.
I’m now a fairly happy Cingular customer, and the switch wasn’t too bad.
I went in during a lunch break and told them which phone I wanted and which plan, and they started the process. The biggest problem I encountered was the automated call center where you can check the transfer status – they kept claiming there was a problem. When I got a human on the phone, I was told it wasn’t in the system, even though several hours had elapsed.
Eventually, it turns out, it was partially due to a not filled request and just the amount of time that it takes to process the request. I went back to the store the next day and the phone worked fine, so I don’t know what I was worried about.
Now I’m all set with the service, but how is it? Well… it’s about the same as what I had with Sprint – meaning that in valleys and other places where tower placement is a problem, I can’t always get a signal, and in places where there are tons of towers, it works great.
The biggest plus so far is that the cell tower near our house seems to be a Cingular carrier – I get a great signal in the whole house, including the basement!
Their online account management site is nice, and even nicer once I figured out how to get my account number (i.e. by calling Cingular to get it). I can get almost up to the minute call details – including incoming and outgoing numbers – and apparently I can change my plan any time I feel like it – hopefully without having to pay any fees.
So far, I’m pretty happy with it. Jen has a Cingular phone too, so we’re going to look into the mobile-to-mobile minutes options, so we don’t have to pay for calls to each other. Other than that and the “7/7/7″ plan – seven days a week, the night/evening call time starts at 7:00 pm for $7 a month – I think I don’t need to worry about the plan at all.
