Wow – just like I used to help make!

eBay item 5142583566 (Ends Dec-06-04 06:00:00 PST) – Internet Kiosk Terminal
Kinda interesting that there are three of them for sale now – they’ve been warehoused for 5 years. I wonder if they’ll sell at all…

    Squirrels and pumpkins

pumpkin guts Like a certain local weather personality, I had a pumpkin ravaged by a local squirrel. In our case, it was during the hour and a half or so we were gone to have breakfast – that was one fast little furr ball.
I tried to get a photo of the squirrel, what with being about 45 pounds and all, but the fat pudge actually managed to get up into a tree and away before I could. I’m just amazed at the speed with which he worked. And the mess he created. Ugh.
Luckily for us, we have a dumpster in the front yard, so I tossed the mess into a bag then into the dumpster. If the squirrels want it, they can go for it in there – as long as they’re careful of the junk ;) .

What’s with all the shock with squirrels eating decorative pumpkins? Were you really displaying it outside in hopes to bring it back in and cook it?

The pumpkin we had out front was actually uncarved – and it’s not like I had plans for it. What got me is that we were only gone about an hour, and this bad boy had done quite a bit of work during that time!

    Blog/CMS suggestions?

I have a new project getting ramped up, and I’m trying to decide if I should stick with my standard blogging software, MovableType, or try something new. If I stick with MT, then I’ll be using an older version as I’m not willing to upgrade at this time. If I go with something new, it will be – well, new.
I’ve played with several different engines in the past, but nothing recent – with the exception of Geeklog for Mc108.com and a copy of TextPattern I have installed for an experiment.
I want something that I can control – meaning something that lives on my server, and preferably something that’s open source and preferably free or low cost. I don’t mind paying someone money, but I want to feel like the software is worth it – and frankly, some of the stuff out there just isn’t.
I know that Lee will suggest the ExpressionEngine, which I haven’t yet played with – but I’m not sure what else is out there. I did just find this breakdown, and it’s helpful, but I have a feeling that there’s going to be some experimenting either way.
Either way, I’ll announce my decision – not that anyone cares :) – and the site itself when I have something working – hopefully in about a week or so.

      Doesn’t EE cost big bucks?
I’m using WordPress – I like it, it’s simple and easy to use. Much lighter on the server than MT. There’s a big upgrade coming to the 1.3 version. On the downside, not much in the way of dealing with comment spam.

Another one to try: WebGUI from PlainBlack Software (www.plainblack.com). We’ve been using it for the DC for Democracy website (www.dcfordemocracy.org) with quite a bit of success. Its interface is markedly different than the MT/EE/WordPress/Nuke stuff, and the company that makes it is quite good.
      Worth a look-see.

Actually, I suggest you try pMachinePro, http://www.pmachine.com, which costs a grand total of $45. I love it for sites that don’t need the full EE deal. You could try the free version, but I don’t think it has capchas (sp?) to block the comment spam. I’m using the free version for a simple little blog on jimandalice.com/current/index.php and it seems to be working out pretty nicely. (I set it up so registration is required for commenting.)

    The perpetual question….

    pvp_hanshotfirst
Who shot first – Han or Greedo?
It’s one of the oldest questions, and not easily answered – even if Lucas has changed things to suit his “vision” of things.
And if you think that Greedo shot first – and you’re fooling yourself – well, I guess you can buy the shirt and use it to wash your land speeder or something. Whatever makes you happy.
    More info can be found…
    here (very good!)
    and a Google search

    HHGTTG Movie update

    Some URL’s:

  • HHGTTG Movie Blog
  • Production Photos
  • Yahoo! Movies Exclusives
  • HHGTTG Movie gallery
Looks like the movies on track to be released sometime next year – hopefully sooner rather than later. My only issue at this point is how they handle some of the humor – mostly British, you know – and if Disney will muck it up in the process….

    Let it…. snow?

    weather041112_t
So, they forecast snow, and they were right for once. The thing of it is, it was November 13 – just a wee bit early for snow.
It was only a half an inch or so, but it was still snow. And it melted almost immediately.
But that didn’t stop the kids from wanting to play in it.
Or from it making me clean off the cars.
    Or shovel the steps.
The geographic idiosyncrasy of our house means that the snow in the front of the house will not melt until the temperature hits above 40° – sometime later this week, perhaps….

    Not quite reality TV

Ok, so I like to watch Law & Order as much as the next person – but tonights episode irked the hell out of me.
As a resident of Connecticut, I did appreciate the fact that they parodied the troubles that the Rowland administration faced, but I didn’t like the “twist” that they decided to add – tying in the whole fiasco that New Jersey went through. It wasn’t that I have an issue with the whole gay angle – or, as Governor McGreevey said, “gay-American” – it was that they decided to make it a “spousal confidence” issue, and therefore a gay marriage issue. But they were wrong – so very very wrong.
How? IANAL, but it seems to me that the whole reason for the spousal confidence rules/laws is to protect a husband or wife from being forced to testify against their wife or husband. In the case of a gay marriage, I guess that would be husband/wife against husband/wife – whatever.
But the crux of the case was that the spouse who was told the crucial information in confidence was WILLING TO TESTIFY. He knew that his lover did wrong, but wanted to tell the truth about it. While one part of the couple could argue it was in confidence, I don’t see how it’s a big deal if the other wants to testify – it then becomes no different than two person conversation, a “he said/he said” sort of thing. But that’s just my opinion.

    20 Questions

    20Q.net
A website where the AI will try to guess what you’re thinking of. I’ve tried it a few times, and it’s always right – pretty impressive.

Amazing – it got wombat and most of my answers were “possible”! Beat it on gripe water though maybe if I’d put residence as UK…

    Guy's new book

    Art of the Start
Guy Kawasaki has, among other things, been Apple Evangelist – meaning he went into the world and tried to win companies over so that they would use the Mac for their product – be it making software or using it for the end product. He’s also been invoved in Garage.com, a venture capital firm with a different way of doing things.
Anyway, he’s recently published another book – Art of the Start – and I can’t wait to read it. He’s written several others, not all of them business books, including my favorite: Hindsights. It’s a book with a great concept – he interviews various people – some famous, some not so famous – and gets a bit of their wisdom – their hindsights. If Art of the Start is only half as good, it will still be a good read….
