Apocolyptic movies: what’s the fascination?

A person that I follower on Twitter (JohnHood) mentioned (admittedly, a while back) something on Twitter about the “reboot” of “Day of the Triffids” that recently aired on the BBC. He seemed pretty excited, so I started trying to find out more about the reboot. And aside from wanting to watch it – which I’ll manage, one of these days – it brought me back to the novel and the movie from 1981 (there was also one from 1962). Good stuff.
If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you probably know that I love – LOVE – apocalyptic movies. End of the world? Good. Some kind of virus takes out 9/10 of the human population? Sweet. SkyNet evolves and the Terminators come? Bring it. Zombies? Sign me up. Something about the idea just fascinates me. I think that part of it is the whole “end of civilization” aspect – shocking, considering how addicted to technology I am.
Another aspect to it could be that it gives everyone a chance to start over on a level playing field, so to speak. We’d all be running from the zombies/ghouls/walking plants – and we’d all be forced to adapt. Some people just wouldn’t cut it, while others would shine. The key here is that you don’t know who’s going to fold and fail, and who’s going to thrive – and that’s part of what makes it all so interesting.
Add to all the above the upcoming mid-season return of AMC’s “The Walking Dead“, and I’m a happy camper. I’ve seen both season one and the first half of season two, and I want more. Before I had seen all of the first season, I was saving up the episodes like hoarding candy – it allowed me to go through a bunch of episodes at once. I recently did the same thing with the last season of “24″ – it allowed me to plow through all the episodes in just under a couple of days. Handy, but you also get your fix all at once. It also allows you to make connections on the little plot twists that get thrown in but you might miss if you’re watching week to week.
But based on the tweets I’ve been reading about “The Walking Dead” and just zombie culture in general, it seems that the show is well received AND a hit.
What do you think? Why are the “end of life as we know it” type shows/movies/genre in general such a big deal? And what is it about “The Walking Dead” specifically – besides it’s general awesomeness – that makes it all so appealing?
