    Friday five: the last time….

When was the last time you…

    1. …went to the doctor?
Just over a year ago, for my last physical.

    2. …went to the dentist?
Just about a month ago, for a filling – without novacaine!

    3. …filled your gas tank?
Just Friday, I believe – it seems like I need gas every 4 days or so, more when I have to venture up to Hartford….

    4. …got enough sleep?
The year was 1998, and it was about 4 weeks before my oldest (:emma: ) was born.

    5. …backed up your computer?
Almost every night, baby! Ever since I lost a term paper back in college (the first time) I’ve been ruthlessly efficient in my fanatical devotion to the king – er, I mean I back up all the time. You only have to suffer that lesson once!

    friday five: celebrity

    1. Who is your favorite celebrity?
Male would be Will Smith, femal Jennifer Garner

    2. Who is your least favorite?
    OJ Simpson

    3. Have you ever met or seen any celebrities in real life?
I’m not cool enough for that. I did see David Canary from All my children once, but that’s ’cause I was behind his car at the Post Office while he went from the passenger to the drivers seat to move it. Fun, eh?

    4. Would you want to be famous? Why or why not?
Yes, but the kind of famous that you get from winning the $100 million PowerBall drawing – that way I would fade from the spotlight after a while.

    5. If you had to trade places with a celebrity for a day, who would you choose and why?
Will Smith, probably – he’s a very down to earth guy, and I think he’s probably one of the best role models out there for kids (and even adults). And hanging with Jada wouldn’t hurt…. :)

Friday Five: home is where you hang your hat

    the friday five

    1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
Three houses, two apartments and five dorm rooms.

    2. Which was your favorite and why?
It’s a toss up between where I live now and where I lived while on my internship in California – it wasn’t the nicest house in the world, but it was a great area (San Jose) and I loved my job at the time….

    3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
    Stressful to the max.

    4. What’s more important, location or price?Location is key – if it’s not in a good place, then it doesn’t matter what the price is.

    5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)
All of the above. And someone else to take care of it all ;) .

    Friday Five: Communications…

    the friday five

    1. Do you like talking on the phone? Why or why not?
On the phone if I can’t talk in person.

    2. Who is the last person you talked to on the phone?
I’m talking to my friend Tracy right now!

    3. About how many telephones do you have at home?
Five – two are cordless, if that matters.

    4. Have you encountered anyone who has really bad phone manners? What happened?
Unless it’s my wife, talking while using the toilet is totally unacceptable. Talking on the cell phone, while driving on the highway, with the window open or the radio blasting is also not right.

    5. Would you rather pick up the phone and call someone or write them an e-mail or a letter? Why or why not?
In most cases, an email is easier – you can get right to the point and not get involved in the “jibber-jabber.” Unless it’s someone you haven’t talked to in a while….

    friday five: words

    the friday five

    1. What is your favorite type of literature to read (magazine, newspaper, novels, nonfiction, poetry, etc.)?
Fiction is fun, but nonfiction can also be good – as long as it doesn’t put me to sleep. I enjoy the newspaper everyday, but magazines are good too. Let’s face it – I just like reading, apparently…

    2. What is your favorite novel?
Not just one, but many. Too many. I could probably narrow it down to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series, by the late (but presumed fed) Douglas Adams.

    3. Do you have a favorite poem? (Share it!)
Nope. The closet I’ve come to a favorite is:
    fleas
    adam had ‘em
I think you can figure out why I know it…

    4. What is one thing you’ve always wanted to read, or wish you had more time to read?
You name it, I probably want to read it. The web has helped to expand my horizons, but when I worked in the library as a teenager, I would put away books and think that it would be interesting to read some. Some I actually bothered to check out, others are still on my very long list of books to read…

    5. What are you currently reading?
The Sigma Protocol by Robert Ludlum – it’s pretty good so far.

    Friday Five: stuff

    the friday five
    1. What is your most prized material possession?
Either my cell phone or my Palm – the cell keeps me in touch, and the Palm is basically a backup of my brain, so it helps me remember.
    2. What item, that you currently own, have you had the longest?
I can’t think of any single item that I’ve had long enough.
    3. Are you a packrat?
    Just a little bit.
    4. Do you prefer a spic-and-span clean house? Or is some clutter necessary to avoid the appearance of a museum?
Cleaner is preferable, but some clutter is better than a pigsty.
    5. Do the rooms in your house have a theme? Or is it a mixture of knick-knacks here and there?
The theme is to keep them decorated and, above all, clean of the childrens things.

    Friday Five: Blogs

    the friday five
    1. Explain why you started to journal/blog.
My journal started as just an update to the current temperature I was enduring at work. Then I started playing with http://radio.userland.comRadio and at the time, and blogging was still young. It quickly tumbled out of control and turned into this site.
    2. Do people you interact with day to day or family members know about your journal/blog? Why or why not?
Of my family, I know that my mother reads it to “catch up” with what I’m doing (hi mom!). I think some of the relatives from Oz or the UK too, but they have neither confirmed nor denied that. Friends/co-workers (or former co-workers, anyway) do, on occasion, but it’s mostly when I tell them to – with one or two exceptions (hi Lee). As far as why? Well, my mother just wants to keep up to date, and my friends probably have some sick fascination with watching my deranged ramblings get worse and worse the longer I’m unemployed. Or something ;) .
    3. Do you have a theme for your journal/blog?
Me myself and I. Actually, it’s “a life less interesting,” but that’s sorta stolen from someone else. Anyone wanna guess who? It’s similar, not a direct rip-off.
    4. What direction would you like to have your journal/blog go in over the next year?
I want it to become more of a “I hate my job” blog again – that would imply I was gainfully employed again! I would also love to get PHP and SQL installed on the server so I can start experimenting with them – I have some ideas for things to do with them…
    5. Pimp five of your favorite journals/blogs.
    The Working Mom
    Moxie
    Camworld
    Explodingdog
    Dooce

    Friday Five: tv

    smattering.org >> the friday five
    1. How many TVs do you have in your home?
Two televisions, and a TV tuner card in my computer. Three VCR’s (one for each TV, including the computer) and a DVD player in case anyone cares…
    2. On average, how much TV do you watch in a week?
Too much. Usually from 7:00 pm ’till the news is on, then maybe a little Letterman or something. Occasionally I’ll watch more during the weekends, but there’s too much to do.
    3. Do you feel that television is bad for young children?
Not really. My youngest (8 months) now watchs Baby Mozart stuff (it’s supposed to help her growing mind) and the other two watch it pretty regularly. But not a lot – it’s all in moderation.
    4. What TV shows do you absolutely HAVE to watch, and if you miss them, you’re heartbroken?
er, Scrubs, CSI, West Wing are among the favorites. I need TiVo – bad!
    5. If you had the power to create your own television network, what would your line-up look like?
The channel would be on cable, satellite and available as streaming video on the web. There would be all kinds of “geeky” shows – like Mcgyver, Misfits of Science, Weird Science, X-Files, all that. I’d also have any of the cool shows that the networks gave up on after a season or two – Seven Days, Space: Above and Beyond, Earth 2, and tons more that are out there. It would probably end up being a lot like SciFi is, but it’d be branded as GeekTV. And I would be the reason that Farscape gets rescued – SciFi management is a bunch of morons for letting that one go.

    Friday Five: shoes

    smattering.org >> the friday five
    1. What size shoe do you wear?
Fourteen (14). Yes, they’re big. Yes, they’re hard to find shoes for.
    2. How many pairs of shoes do you own?
Seven (7). Yes, that’s right, seven. Sneakers, “yardwork” sneakers, 3 pair of dress shoes, sandals, and boots.
    3. What type of shoe do you prefer (boots, sneakers, pumps, etc.)?
Sneakers, then sandals or boots, depending on the weather.
    4. Describe your favorite pair of shoes. Why are they your favorite?
My boots were a Christmas gift from my wife like 2 or 3 years ago – and they kick major ass. L.L. Bean makes very good boots – there’s like no wear on the sole, and I’ve already gone through 2 pairs of shoe laces. Usually the boots go before the laces…. They’re very comfy, I can walk for hours in them, and
    5. What’s the most you’ve spent on one pair of shoes?
Usually spending $80 on a pair of sneakers is more than enough…. I think that the boots were over $100, but considering how much wear I’m getting out of them, I’d say it’s worth it – well worth it!

    Friday Five: school daze

    1. What was/is your favorite subject in school? Why?
Anything where the teacher showed lots of movies ;) .
    2. Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
Mr. Ball, for a creative writing class in high school. He would start class with a free-writing exercise, and always put jazz on his record albulm (yes, RECORDS!) and putter around the room while we did our thing. Very cool.
    3. What is your favorite memory of school?
A couple of friends and I would usually eat lunch outside in high school. Not in the assigned eating area, but we’d just go outside and pick a spot. Kinda like pic-nic’ing, only with the barbed wire and guard dogs :) .
    4. What was your favorite recess game?
Probably kick-ball. I was ok, but I never got razzed or anything, so that was good. I hated being singled out for ridicule….
    5. What did you hate most about school?
Where to begin….? I never really hated school itself, but some of the teachers, and a lot of the work….

    Friday Five: family tree

    fridayfive.org
    1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?
    England and Poland.
    2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit?
I’ve been to England several times, so Poland would be interesting.
    3. Which would you least like to visit? Why?
    Not an issue :) .
    4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage?
Just the usual family get togethers at holidays.
    5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)?
My great-grandparents (on my fathers side) I believe.

    Friday Five: weblog

    fridayfive.org
    1. How long have you had a weblog?
For a really long time. This site has existed for almost a year or so in its current form, but before that I was using Radio, and before that a series of scripts or even just a test editor. What fun that was….
    2. What was your first post about?
Well, it was probably about how fricking cold my office was. The blog started as a note on my webcam page when I was working in Norwalk, CT, and I had to work in the coldest part of the office. The fact that I brought my own heater in didn’t help ’cause it kept tripping the circuit breaker….
    3. How many changes (name, location, etc.) of your weblog have there been, if more than one?
The name has pretty much always been the same (“a life less interesting”), but it’s only since I used Radio that I actually put that on paper, so to speak. The blog has only had two web addresses – cam.snickersnot.com and this one (adam.gerstein.net. There might be another change, but that’s still up in the air.
    4. What CMS (content management system) do you use? Do you like it or do you want to try something else?
I started off using Radio, but that required that I have the computer it was running on ALL the time – and that wasn’t always possible. I tried GrayMatter on another site, but that was a little too detailed for what I wanted – so when I found out about MovableType, I checked it out – and here we are.
    5. Do you read people who have both a journal and a weblog? Or do you prefer to read people who have all of their writing in one central place?
Aren’t a blog and a journal really the same thing? The blogs I go to mostly read a bit like journals, and I use my blog in that way sometimes, so there isn’t much of a difference from my point of view.

    Friday Five: home

    fridayfive.org
    1. What makes you homesick?
Being at work :) . Anything that reminds me of the time I’m missing with my kids.
    2. Where is “home” for you? Is it where you are living now, or somewhere else (ie: Mom & Dad’s house, particular state/city)?
Where-ever I hang my hat. Right now it’s our house here in CT, but if we moved, it would be where-ever – I’m pretty comfortable with that sort of thing.
    3. What makes it home for you? People? Things?
Mostly the peeps. Some things (like a nice comfy bed) but mostly the people around me.
    4. Where is the furthest you’ve been from home, miles-wise?
Not sure of the actual number of miles, but I spent 6 months in Australia just after high school – that’s about as far as you can get from Connecticut!
    5. What are your plans for this weekend?
Same thing I do every weekend: cater to every whim of my wife and kids. This weekend we also have my eldest’s 4th birthday, so we’re having family over for a “Barbie” birthday party. Joy.

    Friday Five: travel

    fridayfive.org
    1. What’s your favorite vacation spot?
Puerto Villarta. Went there on my honeymoon in ’96 – it was pretty damn fun. And the resort caters to kids, too, so bringing the brood wouldn’t be a problema.
    2. Where do you consider to be the biggest hell-hole on earth?
    3. What would be your dream vacation?
    Two words: world tour.
    4. If you could go on a road-trip with anyone, who would it be and why?
As long as there’s plenty of room (i.e. a big-honkin’ RV) then the family. My kids are actually pretty fun!
    5. What are your plans for this weekend?
Wait for the new baby to come home tomorrow – then watch and see how life is disrupted!
